On October 21, me and my husband took our daughters (ages 12 & 18) to see Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers w/ special guest Jackson Browne. I was especially excited to see Tom Petty because not only have I been a fan of his since "Damn the Torpedo's", I was hoping that Stevie would make her cameo appearance as the one and only honorary "Heartbreaker"! Jackson Browne's set was pretty dreary except for the last two songs, "Culver Moon" then the final song "Running on Empty" the latter finally got sleepy concert goers on their feet. Jackson Browne's encore was an awesome "Doctor my Eyes". Good ol' Jackson Browne finally came thru. I just don't understand Artists who try to push their new stuff at concerts. ANYWAY! When Tom Petty arrived it was freakin' unbelievable! After four songs Tom began introducing the Heartbreakers. Meanwhile, I was looking toward the darkened wings, I saw a tiny pen light, a glowing blonde head and chiffon skirts swirling, I grabbed my daughter "TARA! She's here, I see her right stage! AAAAAAAARRG!" I left bruises. Tom introduced the 'only woman to become an honorary Heartbreaker!' I went ape-poop as well as 8,000 other screaming fans. She and Tom sang their duet "Stop Dragging my Heart Around" They sounded awesome together. Stevie looked gorgeous with her long straight blonde hair. She was wearing a black bustier with a fitted jacket, black gloves, black chiffon skirt and black heeled boots. (Not her platforms, but at least she wasn't wearing those gawd-awful Reeboks) After SDMHA, she went into a rip-rockin' "I Need To Know" I'm tellin' ya, at 58 years old, she can still rock! She was doin' her high kicks, and spins. She left the stage to thunderous applause. Tom assured us that Stevie would be back later. Sure enough, she came back out for a beautiful duet "Insider" Stevie and Tom's voice seemed to meld together. It really was beautiful. Stevie was wearing a peach (looked peach) shawl at this point. Afterward, she actually skipped to the right wing near Bugs, Tom went into "Learning to Fly" Stevie sang back ups and did this kind of weird looking thing with her arms. She almost looked like she was doing sign language for the hearing impaired. But that's okay, cos it's Stevie! Then came "Don't Come Around Here No More" Stevie was a cool doing hand claps, shouting "HEY!" and doing her high kicks, she was rockin' like she did when she was a youngin! During Mike Campbell's solo, Stevie began the strobe light dance that everyone was talking about! It was so cool! Blonde hair flying, tambourine and ribbons shaking, shawl swinging! She actually did this huge backbend (not all the way, folks) without holding on to a mike! It was so awesome! Stevie then left the stage. Finally after two more T.P. songs, the concert was over, only for a huge standing ovation. Tom Petty and Co. came back for two more songs, then Stevie came back on stage wearing a badass top hat with a huge white feather, fitted jacket, black bustier, black pants with sequins near the hem, and her heeled boots. Our local paper wrote: "incredible momentum leading to “American Girl” as the third and final encore, but, the site of Petty singing next to Nicks in a top hat, like a Uncle Sam’s wife on acid, was just a great finish." (Bruce Fessier and Michael Felci, The Desert Sun) She truly looked as though she enjoyed the whole time on stage. When I saw her in El Paso with FM, she was beautiful and perfect, but the feeling I got watching her with Tom Petty was she was having the time of her life.
