SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1998-- Excitement is rapidly mounting for the upcoming gala fund-raising dinner in support of the world-renowned City of Hope medical center and research institute. The Nov. 4 event, to be held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, will honor Billboard magazine President & Publisher Howard Lander and Editor in Chief Timothy White, who will be jointly presented with the ``Spirit of Life'' award.

Hosted by actor Bill Murray, the festivities will include performances by (in alphabetical order) Tracy Bonham, BR5-49, Deana Carter, Anita Cochran, Shawn Colvin, Elvis Costello, new addition Sheryl Crow, Don Henley, Angelique Kidjo, John Mellencamp, Stevie Nicks, Anoushka Shankar and James Taylor. Danny Kortchmar and Steve Jordan will be the event's musical directors.

The evening's theme will be ``One Night of Wonders,'' during which the artists will perform their favorite ``one-hit wonders'' from the history of Billboard magazine's famed Hot 100 Singles chart. As the event approaches, artists are busily preparing their selections for the evening, which promises to be one of the most unique and exciting events of the year.

Timothy White commented: ``All of the artists have been having a lot of fun with the one-hit wonders concept, and each of the performers has picked songs to play that they've grown up on or consider guilty pleasures. To call their selections surprising would be an understatement, so we're keeping the set list a secret until the night of the program. Also, to keep the evening particularly special and unusual, we've decided to eliminate the increasingly familiar practice of filming or taping such benefit shows. In short, unless you get a ticket, you've missed your only chance to witness this wildly entertaining and truly one-of-a-kind event.''

Over the past quarter century, the music and entertainment industry has raised nearly $30 million for the City of Hope, located on a 100-acre site in Duarte, California. Founded by a handful of volunteers in 1913, the City of Hope has grown to included 2,500 employees and thousands of volunteers across the country. Supported by a philanthropic volunteer movement, the City of Hope is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases through innovative research and patient care. Among its many accomplishments, The City of Hope has recently made ground-breaking advances in the research and treatment of cancers of the brain, breast, lung, and pancreas, as well as AIDS.
