Space on MTV, VH1 up for grabs

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Record label executives tired of skirmishing with MTV programmers over getting their artists' music videos played can eliminate the middleman and buy primetime on the music outlet.

MTV and its VH1 sister channel have each agreed to donate one hour of programming to be auctioned off during the ``Spirit of Life'' dinner gala set for Nov. 4.

The annual event is hosted by the City of Hope, the medical and research facility in the L.A. area that fights cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Other items include a dinner for nine by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, who will cook at the winning bidder's home; and Playboy Home Video is donating lunch and a day on the set with participants in a home video shoot.

Lunch and a photo shoot with actress/model Cindy Crawford will also be up for sale, while Billboard has agreed to donate its triple-fold cover to a winning bidder.

The dinner, which will be held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, will be hosted by Bill Murray and boast performances by Don Henley, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp and Stevie Nicks, among others.

The evening's theme will be ``One Night of Wonders'' during which the artists will perform songs from their favorite one-hit wonders.
